Excuse me, sorry

Yet another example of our two languages colliding. Brits don't say "excuse me" when they want to squeeze by you, or when they accidentally bump into you. They say "sorry." So yesterday, when I was at the gym and someone wanted to empty the trash can (dust bin) on the other side of me, she said "Sorry" to squeeze past me, and I said "Oh, excuse me." She looked at me expectantly ... and kept looking ... and I looked at her as if to say, "Um, what?" And we just stared at each other for a few awkward moments. Then I said, "I was just saying excuse me because I was in your way." She thought I wanted to ask her a question. I've tried to start saying "sorry" instead of "excuse me" but I don't like sounding as if I'm always apologizing.
